I watched the story of Richie “Whitey” Ashburn today during the almost 3 hour rain delay during the Phillies v Mets (side note: it rained almost no place else in this area but Philly) and I remembered a time I met him. I don’t want to talk about the loss-woe are the Phillies today, anyway, I don’t remember the exact location I saw him. My father took my brothers and I to whatever the event was and we stood in line waiting to get a personalized autographed picture of this baseball legend. I had NO CLUE at the time what a great ball player he was for the Phillies. I was a young teen thinking of all the different places I would rather be than in that line at that time. Not impressed at all. I do remember thinking he didn’t appear to be much of a star to me, he seemed quite common. I certainly didn’t understand my father’s excitement. Now I realize he was a humble man and I am now oh so many years later impressed with the meeting. I have no idea where that autographed picture is or after so many moves if I even still have the picture. I can see it though in my mind, a black and white picture of Mr. Ashburn smoking his pipe and the scribbled autograph across the bottom. I guess it had some sort of impact on me as I do remember all this. I am pretty sure and sad to say the impact was for the most part a lost afternoon with my friends. Still, even though I was not a fan then and I am not a huge fan of sports today, it turned out to be a nice memory.
Melt my heart April 2, 2008
So just a little update on the car situation-at present we do not have any-however we did find out it was an off duty (probably drunk but we’ll never know) police officer that hit our car. Luckily his pleas to cover this up fell on deaf ears. Also we are lucky enough to know someone that has connections in that district to get us this info as I have been told it takes 3 or more weeks for the insurance cos to get the police report. So I can sort of rest a little easy that we will get our $ back but looking for 2 cars-totally stinks.
My daughter starts softball next week-I am looking forward to seeing how she will do- it will be her first team and her cousin will be on the team with her-a bunch of 5 year olds-should be interesting.
Speaking of 5 year olds and well we’ll add in 2 year olds…lately around here seems like I am in constant debate and negotiations with these young people. They sure do keep me on my toes. Seriously, when people say motherhood is the toughest job in the world-they ain’t kiddin’. It is also the most rewarding job one could ever hope to have. On my worst day last week my son came up to me, leaned on my knees, looked up with his big baby blues and said “you’re a pretty mommy.” I might be helping to mold them but I am putty in their hands.
RIP my Fair Weather Friends March 21, 2008
The JEEP is being laid to rest. Doesn’t look too good for the Olds’- now we are cursed with finding 2 vehicles-bleh! The only thing I hate shopping for more than cars is bathing suits! We still do not know who the fugitive from the scene of the crime is…I haven’t seen the accident report and my insurance co hasn’t received a copy yet either. We can go to the station and look at a copy and write anything we want down from it but to actually obtain a copy one must take a trip to City Hall.
If I don’t get back on here before this weekend hope everyone enjoys their holiday!
We are getting SLAMMED this week March 18, 2008
So, yeh, today the JEEP broke down. I really don’t have much more to say about that.
Run Away March 17, 2008
Why couldn’t it have been the JEEP? Yes, yes I know be careful what you wish for…in the wee small hours of the morning yesterday my husband’s car got smoked while parked across the street from his bar. The guy that hit it got out of his car and ran away. I am crossing my fingers he or the owner of the car he was driving has insurance. When the cop reached inside the car and pulled out some piece of ID he said “Oh shit.” Seems he knew the guy for some reason. Guessing he was a cop or affiliated with the police or perhaps wanted for some reason. My husband’s car wasn’t the only one hit, he hit another car and something outside the bank there as he went up over the curb. I do thank my lucky stars my husband wasn’t walking to his car at this time. The other irony (besides the fact we are getting ready to get rid of the other car) is that he rarely parks across the street. It’s always something.
Happy Valentine’s day February 15, 2008
Tonight I ate a meal-hot and uninterrupted-the way God intended. My husband and I always say we have to do this more often and not let 4 months or even a year pass in between the TWO of us getting out-somehow the monthly outing we promised each other 4 months ago-din’t happen. Oh I adore my children but even they need a break form us from time to time as well. It really does clear the mind and refresh you. So thanks to my sister in law, brother and my mom we had a nice night out. What did y’all do last night? If you didn’t get out last night are you planning a weekend celebration of love?
Speaking of love and Valentine’s day. I was raised under the philosophy that Valentines isn’t JUST for lovers. We celebrated all kinds of love on February 14th-we still do. My husband thinks it’s exclusive to those in love-what do you think?
Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz October 19, 2007
So I am the proud owner of a red JEEP Cherokee that has many issues. For one it randomly will or will not open it’s windows. The trunk was mended with bond that was very heavy so we’d have to replace the entire piece to correct the fact that it tries to decapitate you each time you open it. The least of it’s issues is the A/C doesn’t work. Well TODAY it started hurling dark foam pieces at me that I initially thought were bugs. I veered to the side of the road screaming to my kids cover you eyes and keep your mouth shut (I don’t know… I thought the bugs would attack these areas) but when I stopped with all intentions of abandoning the piece of crap I inspected tha large man eating spider on my leg to find it was a piece of foam. So I get to my destination and run inside as it is pouring rain-come out-I had left the lights on. Still I blame this on the automobile as I am certain he is posessed and just to toy with me decided to turn them on himself and almost entirely drain my battery. My vehicle and I we have never been friends and doubt we ever will be…I have named him but I can’t tell ya what I call him-it isn’t very nice.
Meanwhile back at the ranch… September 4, 2007
Wow! While my buddy Elle was on on a real adventure, my biggest run in with wildlife was a baby grasshopper leaping into my plate (incidentally I was totally grossed out by this.) My biggest excitement was getting 4 out of 5 of the grandchildren in a picture-together-I WILL get them all still in a pic SOMEDAY-they might be teenagers by then but by hook or by crook I’ll do it!
