A Brand New Day October 15, 2008
About a month ago I received a phone call from my daughter’s school. At the time I was really upset, feeling like I let my daughter down in some way. They were asking if they could perform more tests on her to assess her language & phonetic abilities. They were looking at placing her in “extended day kindergarten” which I had been under the impression was for children with emotional and learning ability challenges. I didn’t send her to pre-school. After I was laid off from my job almost four years ago the money just wasn’t there to pay for it and let’s call a spade a spade here-the bar business (my husband’s business) just is not what it used to be. As a small business it is taxed to death (I have seen the bills) and people just aren’t spending as much on entertainment today. Once again, I digress, getting back to my daughter-I was quite crushed to get that call. Of coarse I think my daughter is bright and creative, it was a blow, my heart completely sank-yes I cried. We had a meeting tonight and I spoke with a couple “seasoned” moms who already had one or two children come through this prgram and said they were really excited to get the call. Reading the brochure and listening to the teacher’s presentation I found out that this is simply cildren who need a boost in the language area, their primary focus. BIG SIGH of relief my daughter doesn’t have any major issues-she is simply a little behind in basic language skills. They invite children that are a bit behind, need a little more attentions and guidance but that they feel can grasp concepts rather quickly. I almost now feel guilty my daughter is receiving this, it is a privelege really. There will be a teacher and and aid (who is studting for her teaching degree) in the class of 15 children at all times. The teacher designs a specific plan for each child. She will be exposed to many more activities and experiences that half day kids do not receive. Music and art classes will be added to her weekly routine (right now it is just phys ed and library.) As well as computer labs and a room full of extra creative opportunities. A playdoh and clay area, sand & water station, art easil (painting area) opportunities to use one of these stations will be presented each day. They will also have yoga/peaceful time, poetry time, create your own story time every day (as well as many many other daily activities they just don’t have time for in half day K.) It was also a relief to find out I am not the only parent who shed some tears with the call. My daughter really loves her current class and teacher and I know she will miss all her friends as the majority of the children in her new class will come form another school, but I am thinking it is a good lesson in being open to change and new adventurees in life. I have been slowly easing her into the possibility of this change and she shed a few tears tonight but when she went to bed she decided she was excited about the new class. I know she wil be fantastic.
Natural Born Democrat October 10, 2008
Ihave been receiving memos form my daughters school about “Kids Vote.” They are setting up polls for children of all ages to cast their own vote November 4th (they will post results in the paper) at official polling stations-I took Angela with me for the primary elections so she gets the general idea and wants to participate in “Kids Vote.” Anyway the last debate I asked her-without any prodding form me what-so ever-who she would vote for. She chose Obama. I asked her why-she wasn’t sure just like something about him. Apparently my girl has great instincts.
